The NLC Multiband Distortion splits an input signal into four bands, then independently fuzzes/distorts, and is followed by four vactrol VCA's.

This is a Panel set in the Eurorack format.

This module is really a sum of lots of smaller circuits but the results are pretty fkn good

The block diagram shows it best, the input signal(s) are split out into 4 frequency bands (<200, 200-900, 900-4k, >4k) by a filter based on the Buchla 194. Then there are 4 fuzz/distortion circuits based on the Shin-ei FY-2 fuzz pedal (just happens to be my fave), followed by 4 vactrol VCAs.
You can vary the fuzz, blend clean/dirty signals and individually control each VCA with CV (best way to use it). There are individual outputs for each frequency band and two summed outputs.

The components are all 0805/SOIC, except for the transistors, vactrols, diodes, electros and two 10R resistors. No hard to get parts on there, the vactrols are about as exotic as it gets. Not a suitable project for beginners.
