AGRIPPA is (dare I say?) the world’s first stereo “ring modulator” named after the German
philosopher Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim
It goes about ring modulating in a different manner altogether, using a CMOS infrastructure to create new and
harsher sounds. There is no blend or mix knob on this thing as I designed it to be loud and
abrasive. I has only a COARSE or CV pot for regulating the harshness of the modules. I do
however recommend trying it while blending it with an external mixer to create more subtle
results, my favorite here is before a reverb such as Distorted Light with the ring modulation
turned to really low to create a more glowing subtle sound.
Operation of this device is straight forward. Input 1 is normaled to input 2 so you can
connect a mono signal into it and have stereo out (or why not a stereo signal into both
channels). It only has one CV input and when plugged in the knob work as an attenuator for
the incoming signal. With nothing plugged into CV the pot works as COARSE, pot changing
the sound manually (the led works backwards in this mode). The LED pretty much shows
what is going on with this input and how the sound changes. As with many of my modules
the CV input uses an unusual approach using a Infrared optocoupler and since infrared is
super fast this CV input gives great signal with a faster CV signal like audio or audio rate
signals. I prefer using it this way like the ring modulators of olden times, using a carriers
signal (this doesn’t implent this old fashioned approach but mimics it using a completely
different approach).
